Nepal Motorcycle Tour: Upper Mustang
A 13-day ride from Kathmandu into Upper Mustang on Royal Enfields: the restricted high desert of the former Kingdom of Lo, above 12,000 feet.
Nepal
About This Tour
Upper Mustang was closed to foreigners for decades, and entering it still takes a restricted-area permit and a licensed Nepali guide. It sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges: a high desert of ochre cliffs, wind-carved canyons and Tibetan Buddhist villages, above 12,000 feet.
You ride Royal Enfield Himalayans maintained by local professionals who ride these routes for a living. Local partners handle permits, lodging, meals and mechanical support. Bret handles you: your riding, your decisions and your safety. If the terrain gets beyond you at any point, Bret or the support crew gets you and the bike through.
November is the window, after the monsoon and before deep winter, when the skies clear and the passes open. Bret has led seven groups through Nepal, with riders aged 32 to 76.
Highlights of the Route
Kathmandu
Arrive, recover from the flight and see the city's World Heritage sites with a local guide.
Pokhara
Meet your Royal Enfield and the support team by the lake.
Kali Gandaki Gorge
Suspension bridges, cliff roads and river crossings, then the hot springs at Tatopani.
Jomsom and Kagbeni
The road narrows, the air thins, and the permit check marks the edge of Upper Mustang.
Lo Manthang
Two days around the walled capital of the old Kingdom of Lo, its monasteries and the Chosur cliff caves.
Before You Book
Every rider must be able to do all of this. If you're unsure, get in touch before you book.
- Make a left U-turn within 16 feet (5 m) on a Royal Enfield.
- Hold at least 30 mph (48 km/h) on maintained gravel roads.
- Ride off pavement for up to 6 hours a day, at up to 12,500 feet (3,800 m), with energy left to help others.
- Ride safely along exposed cliff edges and narrow mountain roads.
- Accept that Bret may make riding or logistics decisions for you, based on your riding and the group's safety.
This is a live expedition: the group moves at the pace of the slowest rider, and emergency medical care can be hours or days away. Weather and road access can change the route.

Nepal
From a Rider on This Tour
From the crazy traffic in Kathmandu, to the incredible peace, serenity, and sheer spirituality (with occasional craziness thrown in) of riding through the Upper Mustang region, it was an experience like no other. And throughout it all, Bret maintains control, even in the situations beyond all of our control, to provide an experience you’ll just want to repeat for as long as you’re physically able. I can’t recommend any more highly.
